Dr. Helena Schutz is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of Eating Disorders. Dr. Schutz has both Masters and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology from The University of Melbourne. She has published original research in the field of Eating Disorders, and has presented work at both National and International conferences. Dr. Schutz has worked for the past three years in a specialized private hospital Eating Disorders Program in Melbourne. She has also worked in general psychiatric settings with individuals presenting with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, personality disorders and psychosis. Prior to this Dr. Schutz was actively involved in research and primary prevention within the Eating Disorders field.
Dr. Schutz uses an integrative therapeutic approach incorporating cognitive-behavioural techniques within a psychodynamic frame of reference. She works collaboratively with clients to identify the deeper psychological issues underlying their symptoms. Dr. Schutz's therapeutic approach aims to empower clients by working with them to develop the necessary insight and skills to move forward in their lives.
In addition to working with individuals with Eating Disorders, Dr. Schutz also sees clients with a range of other psychological difficulties including anxiety, depression, self-esteem/self-development, life transition and adjustment issues, stress management, weight management, assertiveness training, shyness and social skills deficits, general counselling, post-natal depression, carer support, difficulties within interpersonal relationships, and adult survivors of sexual abuse. Dr. Schutz has particular interests in the relationship between the mind and the body; the impact of childhood trauma on development and personality functioning; and psychodynamically informed approaches to dealing with psychological difficulties.
Dr. Schutz is a member of the Clinical College of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and is a registered Clinical Psychology Medicare Provider. Dr. Schutz is a member of the following APS interest groups: Trauma and Psychology, Psychoanalyically Oriented Psychology and Psychology of Eating, Weight and Body Image.
